Book our Itálica tour and discover this ancient Roman city located in the southern part of Spain, near Seville. It is one of the best preserved Roman sites in Europe.
Itálica was the first colony that the Roman Empire established in Hispania and also outside Italy.
The city was founded in 206 BC by Publius Cornelius Scipio Scipio, the African, as a place to recover wounded troops as well as a place of residence for his war veterans. It was the birthplace of the emperors Trajan and Hadrian.
The city was sacked by Vandals in AD 455 and by the Visigoths in AD 524. Later, the city served as the capital of the Byzantine Baetica province, before its reconquest by the Goths.
Once in Italica, you’ll be given a brief presentation of the place by our official guide, after which we’ll explore the ancient city together. Discover all its secrets as you walk down ancient streets, marvel at mosaics and thermal baths, and learn about the aqueducts and houses that have been preserved over the centuries.
We will discover the third largest Amphitheatre in the world, with a capacity of 25,000 spectators. The famous gladiator fights took place here recently, and it has also been used as a stage in the popular series Game of Thrones.
After visiting the archeological site, we’ll take you to the Monastery of San Isidoro del Campo. This medieval fortress contains treasures from the Mudejar, Gothic and Baroque periods, including mural paintings and significant sculptures. Inside the monastery is the sepulcher of the Guzmanes.
