In this tour we will visit two of the wonders of Seville: La Giralda and the Cathedral

On this guided tour we will visit The Cathedral of Seville, the largest Gothic cathedral in the world, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1987, along with the Real Alcazar and the Archivo de Indias, and La Giralda, the bell tower of the Cathedral.

The Cathedral of Seville is the largest Gothic cathedral and the third-largest church in the world . It is also the burial place of Christopher Columbus . Its construction began in 1401 and continued for more than 500 years. Despite the ravages of time and war, it remains a towering example of the Spanish Gothic style, with its delicate tracery of acanthus leaves and detailed carving. The cathedral contains many fine paintings and sculptures.

La Giralda is the Cathedral bell tower. This monument is of Gothic style, built between 1384 and 1391. It is 97 meters high and has more than 700 steps. The tower stands on the highest part of the city, the Giralda hill, and soars above the cathedral and the Alcázar. Its height is justified by its function as a minaret, as at that time it was also used to broadcast the call to prayer five times a day. The current name of the tower is popularly thought to be a corruption of the Arabic word “Yár?d?n” (meaning “the watchtower”), although some scholars believe it came from the Latin “Ara”.

On the other hand, it’s a little tricky to find the top of the Giralda. If you’re walking through the city, the first thing you’ll notice is that the tower is surrounded by large, beautifully decorated bullring… something that might be a bit confusing for the first-time visitor. (After all, the tower was originally built as a minaret.) But the best way to find the entrance is from the inside: once you’re inside the bullring, exit the ticket office on the opposite side to emerge inside the tower itself. From there, a series of narrow, winding staircases will take you all the way to the top.
