The Drach Caves are among the most visited in Europe and many consider them the 8th Wonder of the World. The Lake Martel, one of the largest underground lakes in the world, is the scene of a classical music program. The inside temperature is very pleasant and constant throughout the year: 21 Celsius. We recommend wearing comfortable shoes during the visit.

Palma de Mallorca

Palma was founded as a Roman camp upon the remains of a Talaiotic settlement. The city was subjected to several Vandal raids during the fall of the Western Roman Empire, then reconquered by the Bizantine Empire, then colonised by the Moors (who called it Medina Mayurqa) and, in the 13th century, by James I of Aragon.

Porto Cristo

The name Port de Manacor/Porto Cristo, meaning “The Port of Manacor/The Port of Christ” given to it back in 1260 AD at the time of the Christian invasion of Mallorca, A fishing boat was found washed up on the beach containing a crucifix. Legend has it that an ox was carrying an icon of God through the town, and the ox stopped and refused to walk anymore. Hence the people saw this as a sign and the name was derived from that belief it was a clear sign that Christ wanted to be here.

The Drach Caves

The Drach Caves are four impressive caves -formed in the interior of carbonate rocks, between 11 and 5.3 million years ago- that are located on the east coast of Majorca, specifically in the town of Porto Cristo. Its interior could easily be confused with a SF film set,  but it can easily be explained as a lifetime result of filtering rainwater dripping over limstone rocks which dissolve easily upon contact. This erosion process has resulted in the sculption of stalactites and the corresponding stalagmites.

The four caves, called Cueva Negra (Cova Negra), Cueva Blanca (Cova Blanca), Cueva de Luis Salvador (Cova de Lluis Salvador) and Cave of the French (Cova dels francesos), are connected to each other. The caves have been formed by the action of rainwater, and some scholars consider their formation could date back to the Miocene.

They host a large underground lake, called Lago Martel (Llac Martel), about 115 m long and 30 m wide. In this lake, considered one of the largest underground lakes in the world, live classical music concerts are offered daily. You can cross the lake by boat at the end of the concert.

Yes — a roughly 10-minute live classical music concert is performed from boats on the underground Lake Martel, included in your ticket, followed by a short boat crossing of the lake at no extra charge.

The cave route is about 1,200 meters with some steps and handrails, and the ground can be a little slippery from humidity, so flat, closed shoes with good grip are the smart choice. The cave is not wheelchair accessible and strollers aren't allowed inside; if you have limited mobility or a heart condition, let us know beforehand so we can advise you properly.

No, food and drinks aren't included in the price, but Porto Cristo has plenty of restaurants and cafés where you can stop for lunch during the day — we recommend bringing water for the walk.
