The Hams Caves are over 10 million years old, but people has only been able to enjoy their beauty since they were discovered back in 1905 by the speleologist Pedro Caldentey Santandreu (1886-1950) while he was digging for onyx, a precious stone abundant in the region.

In 1910 he managed to produce electricity to illuminate the cave even before electric power had reached the village of Porto Cristo. Using a water mill, a dynamo and a water tank, he generated 16 hours of electric current to enable visits to the caves.

In the Blue cave, with its spectacular new blue lighting using led technology, you can enjoy the educational documentary “Discovering the past” about the history of Majorca, its first inhabitants, the formation of the Hams caves and their discovery.

Palma de Mallorca

Palma was founded as a Roman camp upon the remains of a Talaiotic settlement. The city was subjected to several Vandal raids during the fall of the Western Roman Empire, then reconquered by the Bizantine Empire, then colonised by the Moors (who called it Medina Mayurqa) and, in the 13th century, by James I of Aragon.

Caves of Hams

The caves were discovered on 2 March 1905 by Pedro Caldentey. The caves lie along the route between the regional capital of Manacor and the coastal town of Porto Cristo. Like Coves dels Drachs, the Coves Dels Hams hold an underground lake, which is known as “The Sea of Venice”. The caves get their name from the unique formations of the stalactites and stalegmites. Hams is the Mallorquí (local dialect of Catalan) word for fishhooks or harpoons. Scientists have yet to explain the cause of these unique formations.

Lorenzo Caldentey, a son of the discoverer, is a certified diver and has outfitted the caves with an electric lighting system for performances and tours. Multilingual tour guides lead visitors on a roughly 500 meter walk through 12 different areas of the caves. Currently the visitors also enjoy the “Magical Mozart” concert accompanied by a light show. The musicians navigate the “Sea of Venice” in a small rowboat with candle-lit railings. The caves are a popular tourist attraction for tour groups and individual visitors during the summer months.

Porto Cristo

The name Port de Manacor/Porto Cristo, meaning “The Port of Manacor/The Port of Christ” given to it back in 1260 AD at the time of the Christian invasion of Mallorca, A fishing boat was found washed up on the beach containing a crucifix. Legend has it that an ox was carrying an icon of God through the town, and the ox stopped and refused to walk anymore. Hence the people saw this as a sign and the name was derived from that belief it was a clear sign that Christ wanted to be here

Majorica Pearl Store

Our tour includes an interesting stop in the city of Manacor to visit the Majorica Pearl Store, which has more than one hundred years of experience in the manufacture of globally recognized organic artificial pearls. Founded more than a century ago by a German engineer, the factory is a pioneer in the manufacture of artificial pearls in Europe. The full experience runs about 5 hours door to door, in an air-conditioned coach with a live guide narrating along the way. That includes the drive to Porto Cristo on the east coast, roughly an hour inside the Hams Caves, and a stop at the Majorica pearl factory before heading back to your hotel.

They're a different experience, not a lesser one. Where Drach is known for its huge underground lake and orchestral boat show, Hams is quieter and more intimate — no busloads of day-trippers crowding the walkways, so you can actually take your time with the formations and the audiovisual presentation at your own pace.

The caves were discovered in 1905 and take their name — 'hams', or fish hooks in Mallorquín — from the shape of the stalactites hanging from the ceiling. Inside you'll walk past illuminated galleries and the underground lagoon known as the 'Sea of Venice', plus a short multimedia show on how the caves and the island were formed.

It's rated an easy walking difficulty and paced for a general adult audience — flat, well-lit pathways with handrails throughout the caves. It isn't wheelchair accessible, though, so if you use a wheelchair or have significant mobility limitations, get in touch with us first and we'll tell you honestly whether it's a good fit.

The stop is at the Majorica pearl factory in Manacor, a family business with over a century of history making their organic artificial pearls — it's genuinely part of the island's craft heritage, not a random shopping detour. A cap and sunscreen for the outdoor stretches, water, and comfortable shoes, since there's a fair bit of walking between the coach, the caves, and the pearl factory.
