The Cathedral of Seville is an impressive piece of Gothic architecture located in the heart of the city. It is the largest Gothic cathedral in the world and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.
Construction of the cathedral began in 1401 on the site of a former Almohad mosque and was completed in the 16th century. It houses numerous works of art and treasures, including the tomb of Christopher Columbus. Its interior is equally impressive, with a wide and tall central nave, numerous chapels, and a magnificent main altarpiece.
The Cathedral of Seville and the Giralda are two of the main tourist attractions in the city and attract millions of visitors from around the world each year.
Giralda
Avenida de la Constitución s/n, 41004 Sevilla
The Giralda is the iconic bell tower of the Cathedral of Seville. It stands adjacent to the cathedral and is one of the most recognizable symbols of the city. Originally constructed as the minaret of the Great Mosque of Seville during the Islamic rule of Spain, it was later converted into a bell tower when the mosque was transformed into a cathedral after the Reconquista.
The Giralda is renowned for its distinctive architectural style, blending Moorish and Renaissance influences. It reaches a height of 104 meters (343 feet) and is topped by a bronze weathervane, known as “La Giraldilla“, which gives the tower its name.
Today, visitors can ascend the tower via a series of gently sloping ramps, offering a relatively easy climb with breathtaking views of Seville’s skyline and surrounding areas.
