Medina Azahara – Madinat al-Zahra Archaeological Site
Nowadays, Medina Azahara is an archaeological site located at 8 km from Córdoba. It was built by Abderramán III to demonstrate his power and superiority over his enemies. The city developed and expanded during his reign and his son’s, al-Hakam II. Unfortunately, during the civil war of Al-Ándalus in the 11th century, Medina Azahara was destroyed.
The excavation of the city officially began in 1911. Today, of the more than 100 hectares it occupied, only 10 hectares have been excavated.
In 2018, the archaeological site was declared a Unesco World Heritage Site.
You will have a guided visit inside the museum, then you will see a projection of the archaeological site and finally, you will have a guided visit to the actual Medina Azahara.
