Located in the center of Madrid, between the Puerta del Sol and the Palacio Mayor, the Plaza Mayor measures 129 meters long by 94 meters wide and is surrounded by arcades and three-storey buildings.
Built by several architects, the real creators were Juan de Herrera and Juan Gómez de Mora . The Plaza Mayor has been rebuilt and renovated several times, after suffering several fires.
Known in the 15th century as the Plaza del Arrabal , later the Plaza Mayor has adopted other names: Plaza de la Constitución, Plaza Real and Plaza de la República. The current name is preserved since the end of the Civil War.

- Statue of Felipe III
Equestrian statue located in the center of la Plaza Mayor, it serves as a meeting point.
It was created in 1616 by Juan de Bolonia and Pietro Tacca and It was a gift from the Duke of Florence to the Spanish king.
It has not always been located in the Plaza Mayor, until the mid-nineteenth century was in the Casa de Campo.
- Bakery House
It is the main building of the Plaza Mayor and was the first to be built in 1590. It was the most important bakery in Madrid. The facade is decorated by Carlos Franco.
- Cuchilleros Arch
This arch is the best known of the nine access gates. The name comes from the street with which it communicates, calle de Cuchilleros.
